Imagine a town where the police routinely arrest polar bears.
It sounds like something from a children’s book, but in the remote community of Churchill, Manitoba, it’s a very real part of life. Every fall, as hungry polar bears wait for Hudson Bay to freeze, some wander too close to town in search of food. Rather than destroy these magnificent animals, the conservation officers from the Manitoba Department of Natural Resources and Northern Development through their Polar Bear Alert Program use an extraordinary solution—a temporary holding facility known around the world as the Polar Bear Jail.
During my time in Churchill, I had the rare opportunity to photograph these incredible bears and learn the remarkable story behind one of the world’s most successful wildlife management programs. This photo story takes you behind the scenes, explaining how the Polar Bear Jail works, why it was created, and how it has helped people and polar bears coexist for decades.
Along the way, you’ll see a collection of my rarely seen photographs of the Polar Bear Holding Facility, giving you a closer look at these powerful Arctic predators and the people dedicated to protecting them.
