Local Puget Sound
Photography Workshops
These are 90-minute workshops designed to take advantage of some of the Puget Sound’s iconic scenery. Each workshop includes professional instruction designed with the beginners in mind, but all levels can enjoy the beautiful views and the images they will take home with them! Offered from late spring through summer & fall.
UW Cherry Blossoms
Each spring, the University of Washington’s iconic Quad transforms into a breathtaking display of delicate pink and white cherry blossoms, drawing visitors from near and far. These enchanting trees, some over 90 years old, create a magical canopy that serves as a stunning backdrop for photos, gatherings, and quiet moments of reflection. The cherry blossoms at UW offer an unforgettable experience that celebrates the arrival of spring and the enduring charm of nature’s artistry.
Our workshop will arrive early, 07:00 AM, and if it’s raining, that’s great! The water on the bricks will look beautiful! I will help everyone get started with correct framing and exposure and continue till the end of our workshop. At the conclusion, those that have the time can join us for coffee to discuss our adventure together. Here’s a good link to follow the best times to photograph the cherry blossoms.

Kerry Park – Landscape Photo Workshop
I really love this view! Kerry Park is one of Seattle’s most photographed locations, and for good reason. Perched on the south slope of Queen Anne Hill, it offers a postcard-perfect view of the downtown skyline framed by Elliott Bay, with Mount Rainier often looming in the background on clear days. The park was gifted to the city in 1927 by Albert and Katherine Kerry, specifically so the public could enjoy this sweeping panorama. For photographers, it’s a natural classroom—perfect for practicing cityscapes, sunsets, blue hour, and night photography, all from a single vantage point.

Edison Lutheran Church – Sunrise Landscape Workshop
Nestled in the heart of the Skagit Valley, Edison Lutheran Church is a beloved landmark for photographers exploring Washington’s Puget Sound region. Its classic white wooden façade, simple steeple, and timeless design make it an icon of rural Americana—a subject that resonates equally well in wide-angle landscapes and intimate detail shots.
The church sits against the backdrop of fertile valley farmland, with open skies that transform into a canvas of color at sunrise. Early mornings here are especially rewarding: the soft golden light paints the church in warm tones, while the fields and distant foothills glow with mist and dew. Photographers often frame the steeple against the rising sun, capturing silhouettes, pastel skies, or dramatic bursts of light just over the horizon.
In spring, fields of tulips and wildflowers nearby can be incorporated into compositions, adding vibrant foreground interest. In fall, earthy tones and fog drifting through the valley create a moody, almost ethereal atmosphere. Even on overcast days, the white structure pops beautifully against the soft gray skies that the Pacific Northwest is famous for.
From a creative perspective, Edison Lutheran Church offers endless possibilities: symmetrical shots of its front entry, long exposures at dawn to smooth out passing clouds, or wide compositions that place the church within the grand sweep of the Skagit Valley. It’s no surprise this small, historic building has become one of the most photographed rural churches in Washington—a peaceful reminder of tradition and community, perfectly framed by nature’s drama.

Seattle Japanese Garden – Composition & Seasonal Color Workshop
The Seattle Japanese Garden, tucked inside the Washington Park Arboretum, is one of the city’s most tranquil and visually rich photography locations. Designed with balance, harmony, and seasonal color in mind, it offers endless opportunities to refine composition and explore creative perspectives.
Stone lanterns, arched bridges, koi-filled ponds, and winding paths provide natural leading lines and layered scenes. In spring, cherry blossoms and azaleas burst into soft pastels; in summer, the greenery is lush and reflective; autumn transforms the garden into fiery reds and golds, while winter offers a quiet minimalism with bare branches and textured moss. Every season brings a new palette, making this garden a living classroom for photographers.
This workshop focuses on composition, depth, and color harmony—using both wide and tight frames to capture the essence of the garden. Due to park restrictions, this workshop is limited to only two photographers, and tripods are not allowed, so all shooting will be hand-held. A wide-to-standard zoom (16–35mm or 24–70mm) is ideal for capturing landscapes, while a telephoto (70–200mm) helps isolate details and compress colors into painterly patterns. A polarizer can enhance reflections and deepen foliage tones, and careful use of shutter speed and stabilization techniques will allow you to capture sharp images hand-held, even in lower light.
Participants will learn how to build strong compositions from subtle scenes, experiment with symmetry and framing, and use the garden’s seasonal beauty to elevate their photographic storytelling—all while mastering handheld techniques in a challenging and inspiring environment
