How to prepare for your photoshoot

Maternity & Newborns

Experienced and patient parent and grandparent.

Maternity photos are a great lifestyle opportunity, let’s chat and see what types of images appeal to you outdoors, hobby, something dramatic like a studio.

Newborns are done exclusively in your home. I have lots of newborn props, baby wraps, faux fur, but we can always use things in your home, maybe a family memento?

Tips to Prepare for your newborn's photo Session

By Kevin Murphy
  1. Schedule early
The best time for newborn photos are when your child is between 5–14 days old, between 7–10 days after birth is the ‘zone’. Anytime after that, your newborn is no longer ‘new’, and now starting to move more so those classic newborn photo’s are not possible. Plus the stress on the parents …
2. Try to keep your baby awake:
If you can keep baby awake for 2–3 hours before the session, that would be perfect! You can try giving them a bath, tickle their toes, let them kick with only a diaper on, or try some tummy time.
3. Feeding
If you can feed your newborn 20-30 minutes before the session. A quiet baby is less likely to cry and more likely to sleep.
4. Keep the baby comfortable:
Keep the home warm and move the baby as little as possible to keep them sleepy and avoid overstimulation. Don’t force them to stay awake, but if possible, coordinate their awake and sleep times with your photographer.
5. Prepare the baby:
We want ot make the transition from sleeping to posing as seamless as possible. So … dress the baby in simple, sweet clothing. A loose fiaper is best. Lol, not too loose, but the idea is not to leave any marks from the clothing or diapers on your baby.
Safety Tips for your photoshoot:

Photo Studios and Locations

I work with many local studios and I can help with the selection process. Here are a couple of my favorites …

Peerspace has a number of great locations for photoshoots. It’s like the VRBO of photo studios! We can discuss these locations on your pre-call.

Your own home is also possible, I can bring my lighting to your home! We’ll need to discuss room dimensions, windows and natural light available.

Outdoors – I’m very familiar with the area and can suggest great seasonal backgrounds for any family photo. Or … work with you on your own ideas.

Family Events

I’m not sure that I’d hire a professional photographer for a birthday party, lol but … I recently attended my grandkids T-ball game, I took a number of great candid shots and … I put them into a short video reel! You can use your link to make your own photobook! Lot’s of possibilities …
