Mama Bears & Cubs of Katmai – 3 Little Bears

The 3 Little Bears … and BIG Bear!

We’ve all had the special occasion or family gathering where we take the family portrait right? A cherished moment for sure. Ok, everyone … look into the lens and smile! But, in evidently, one or more of the kids move or get distracted! Lol, well it’s good to know this problem is also very common in the animal kingdom as well! Here’s the story of the 3 bears, sans Goldilocks!

I kinda like the portrait view …

As we were walking the trail to river, we came up to this mama grizzly and her 3 cubs. They were resting in an open field so mama could protect her cubs. We were able to get pretty close* to this grizzly family and the cubs were looking right at us! So, I instructed the cubs to hold that pose while I got ready for the shot … but before I could press the shutter-release, they turned abruptly to their left, all at the same time!

Well … when I turned to see what the distraction was a huge boar emerging from the brush, about 100 yds away from us was walking in our direction! The cub’s reaction then made perfect sense but mama on the other hand, was calm and cool. It wasn’t her first rodeo! It seems. The approaching, large boar, cut this family portrait session short and we retreated to a safe distance to let this huge male pass us by …
